The Brewery for lunch
Once on Pikk we called into The Brewery for lunch. We settled in to rest our legs and I had Estonian sausages plus a local brewed beer.
Hellemann Tower and the Town Wall
The temperature was now noticeably warmer and the light covering of snow was melting as we walked back through the Town Square.
In the square there was this special seat.
On our way back towards the Viru Gates here’s one of the road obstacles. Then a glance up Dunkri towards The Beer House in the daylight. Look carefully and you can see the snow and ice melting from the heat of the pipes beneath the cobbled street.
St Nicholas’Church …
Before the Viru Gates we turned along Muurrivahe to look up at the Town Wall. Under the wall were stalls selling knitwear, hats, gloves etc. At the Hellemann Tower we paid the 3 Euros fee and climbed up the modern spiral staircase up to the walkway on the walls. We now could look across the Old Town as we walked along the wall. In places the floor of the walkway was concrete and this was very slippy as we walked back towards the Viru end of the wall.
I then climbed up the Hellemann Tower. This was again up a old stone spiral staircase and once in the upper chamber I could take pictures through the windows over the slits.
I did notice a door and when I opened it I then had an unobstructed view across to Toompea.
I later used a cropped version of this image for this black and white view of the Old Town.
Viru Gates
As we came up to the gates we heard a loud crash and this car had rolled down the hill and hit one of the towers. Luckily no-one was hurt.
A brisk walk and soon we were back at the Hilton. There we put our feet up for a couple of hours, read our books and enjoyed a glass of wine.
