Tallinn Old Town
After Tammsaare Park we could see the twin towers of the Viru gates. The park itself was cordoned off as a major renovation was in progress.
The two towers of the gates were festooned with lights and looked magical. The cobbled street was covered in snow but thanks to a generous amount of salt and grit was OK to walk on.
Here are views up Viru and back down towards the gates.
We turned right into Town Hall Square past the side of the Town Hall. The buildings around the square were lit and the square itself had a tree covered in lights and decorations.
We walked across the square to the row of restaurants opposite and went into the Olde Estonia.
Interesting that having passed bars on Viru offering beer at 4 Euros we were now in one that charged 7 Euros for the same draft Saku! Our surprise continued when we saw ‘bear’ steaks on the menu – surely a translation issue?
The Beer House
A quick look at our guide book and we went out of the square and up Dunkri to The Beer House.
Through the windows as we walked to the doors we could see the micro-brewery – a good sign.
We went through the main room of the restaurant and into the back room. This had small alcoves for more intimate dining. We sat outside one of the alcoves on a table for two to enjoy what was happening around us. Beer in this restaurant was 4 Euros and the accompanying food was excellent. I had pork chops with wok fried vegetables and another pint after a shared plate of garlic bread.
Back to the Hilton
The other restaurants and bars were all buzzing as we walked back through the Old Town to the Viru Gates.
After the gates we called at the Wine Store, down their spiral staircase and picked up a couple of bottles of wine. There was a good choice of wines and at a reasonable price of around 7 Euros. When we emerged from the shop the falling snow had turned to sleet.
This time we went back through the just one but again finished up on the other side of the of Gonsiori. On this side of the street we passed a large mural.
On this side of the street there were no crossings to the park so we had to cross back, then over Pronski and then back again to the park!
Now it was time to put our feet up, enjoy some wine, read a book and watch the city through our room windows.
