This was the third round of the printed image competition and had the set subject of ‘In your dreams’. This year at the camera club is a transition year and there are no separate divisions – everyone’s images are being judged in one competition.
Sailing into the sunset
Judge’s comments
…this print has certainly got a dream like quality to it in the way it has been treated, the sunset and the sailing boat heading towards what looks like the shore, and there’s quite a pleasing formation of waves , two waves really, one in the centre and one on the right side
… the horizon occupying just about below half
… a beautiful sky and some very dreamlike clouds as well
… my first impression after having seen this is that it has quite a heavy vignette and although that might be part of the dream atmosphere it is just a shame that it has ended up rendering the sky just a little bit unnatural , although you could say it is how you view dreams
… it does slightly put me off giving it a higher mark,
… the colours are rendered extremely well , always difficult when you include the sun in a print
Starships or clouds?
Judge’s comments
… looking at rare cloud formations in this part of the world … if you look down at the bottom you can see a seascape with some details of land , the [cloud are probably forming as it hits the land
… a lovely textual feel, and set off by an almost full moon , very subtly done in terms of the tones there
more
… if this were mine i would have tried to liven the whole thing just a little bit, dream like, bringing out the vibrance just a little bit more to get that cloud really singing at you
… you have left it subtle, that’s your choice,
… there’s a hint of vertical lines on this one, I don’t know if that is the printing problem or, but not that obvious
… I like that, I’m not going to hold it back
The scores for ‘In your dreams’

The original images
Both of these images were from my back catalogue.
‘Sailing into the sunset’ was taken with one of my original digital cameras, an EOS 350D. I shot it at ISO 100 f/7.1 at 1/125 sec and only in JPEG. We were on the beach in Aruba watching the yachts tack along the coast as the sun was setting. A straight version of this image we have had printed on a small canvass that currently is on the wall in our dining room.
Sailing into the sunset was taken in June 2009. Here is the original of the clouds image.
‘Starships or clouds’ was re-titled for this set subject competition. This image I shot from the moving deck of P&O Azura as she sailed out of the Azores on a trans-Atlantic crossing. I shot it at ISO 200 f/10 and 1/250 sec on my EOS 7D. This was one of a series of images as I tried to capture the lenticular cloud formations and the full moon. The image is dated November 2014 and is already on this site here.
