Day 6 – April 19th 2015
This blog details the last day in our Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage in April 2015 and follows on from my earlier blogs. We had left Molde the previous evening and were starting our final few hours of sailing to Bergen.
I was awake enough to notice docking at Alesund and went out on deck hoping to have a walk on dry land.
After we had docked there was the usual hive of activity loading and unloading cargo.
I was advised that it was going to get busy so I went back to the promenade deck and watched as two coached arrived full of passengers joining for the journey down to Bergen.
I’m afraid that I didn’t see any of Torvik as this was a night that I slept through the arrival and departure at a port. Similarly with Maloy I missed both the arrival and departure and only emerged on deck to take pictures as we sailed away from the town. These pictures are black and white to correct the colour balance I had set up for the earlier pictures in Alesund.
MS Nordkapp passed by in the early morning after Maloy but by then I was again catching up on sleep. Our last port before Bergen was Floro.
Here’s the view looking out as the ship was docked at Floro.
We sailed along the famous landmark called Alden (also known as the Norwegian Horse). We crossed by the mouth of Sognefjord which is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. It is 124 miles long and reaches a depth of 4,747 feet. This is where we have cruised before with P&O last year. The weather was simply terrific for the final part of our voyage and we spent almost the whole time on deck simply watching the coast glide by and taking in more of the stunning views of the Norwegian coast. Lots of tea in our insulated mugs helping to keep us warm as we stood on the foredeck along with the other hardy souls who stayed out to enjoy the views.
Click any picture for some of the views as we sailed towards Bergen.
Yes we did sail through this gap !
We passed under bridges
And went past the longest floating bridge in Norway after passing under its accompanying bridge.
We arrived in Bergen on time and the town was bathed in sunshine unlike our previous visits when it had its characteristic rain and low cloud.
Approaching our dock in Bergen we passed crowds of people enjoying the sunshine.
Unlike other coastal voyages we were allowed to leave our baggage in our room until later in the day and had longer access to our rooms as the MS Finnmarken was going out of service for a time for repairs after docking in Bergen.
After a wonderful few days we left MS Finnmarken on a coach to transfer to Bergen airport for our flight back to London Heathrow via Copenhagen.
And as a reminder that in April Norway still has lots of snow and frozen lakes even in April here are two views out of the window as we flew to Copenhagen.
