These are my images for the fourth round of the internal print league competition for the 2016-2017 season.
Waiting patiently for customers
This image was part of my OU/RPS panel and is from my photo walk around Brixton in November last year. I have cropped the image more closely to take away some more of the distracting red lights.
Judge’s comments
… I wonder what he sells, or is it a service, there’s an amplifier in the back here or speaker cabinet, we can’t read what it says
… he looks or gives the appearance of being sophisticated than he is , he has a funny hat and an unkempt beard and straggly hair and a brand new denim jacket and possibly a university scarf, or then again it might be something completely different
… he also seems to be tall
… so its a portrait of a man and we know nothing about him but he does have a bottle of mayonnaise in the back there[interruption from member of the audience “he sells pizza in Brixton”]
… sells pizzas in Brixton? So mayonaise on pizzas in Brixton?
… However, we’ve gone for a square image and we’ve left the mount as a rectangle. I think when you do that you could do it the other way up and then raise the portrait a little bit above the centre
… the lighting and the subject is good. There’s a bit of confusion in the background that is always going to draw your eye, the mayonnaise, the hooks and the speaker cabinet
… I suspect therefore that this is less of a specimen photograph more of a series or a panel that explains about Brixton’s amazing market
Through the arch
This image is from my photo walk around Westminster Bridge in December last year.
Judge’s comments
… has got a feeling about it, we can all see the lighting on everything is very good.
… been worked on I expect, maybe HDR to get the detail on the brickwork of the arch that isn’t lit as far as I can tell. The light coming from the street light beyond
… see that lovely puddle …
… if I understand correctly this is down at f32 because of the star burst on the specular highlight there. The worry is that there is another specular highlight beyond, and another [light] with no starburst. Has this been added?

Out of interest here’s the original image before I used Lightroom to help with the light and dark areas in the image (f4, ISO3200 1/15 sec with 35mm lens.)
