This was the first print round of the new season and the first under the new competition rules at Farnborough Camera Club. Just as for the PDI Trophy Competition each round has two “themes” set by the Club. The challenge for participants is then to submit images that have a roughly defined “genre” with the added condition that each submitted image must have a different “genre”.
A further change was the combination of the two Print divisions into just one. The judge then looked at the submitted images as two separate groups before and after the break.
This first round was set to have “Open” for both themes.
Admiring the art
I chose “Street” as the genre . . .
Summary of judge’s comments
… yes street art isn’t definitely
… street art has become very very popular both interns of what Banksy & co do on buildings and properties in the area but also have works of art, I know Banksy has produced many many works of art and there’s a new street artist coming along, a Frenchman, called Mr Brainwash ; sounds bizarre but I was on a cruise and the people at the fine art studio on there were telling us about his prints that would increase in value [ ]
… I’ll get back to the street art now, there is a fine line between street art and graffiti, I mean graffiti is not normally attractive, you know it is just daubed and tagging as it were
… this street art has some sort of texture to it , the street art here is genuine street art, this guy is walking across, I am not sure if he is part of the street art, I don’t think he is just walking across,
… such is your shutter speed , yu have worked this out, you have some movement in this silhouette walking across, and you have used a very slow shutter speed just to give a blurred outline of this chap here
… and for some reason, on purpose or not, but where his head is you have almost like a thought bubble coming out of his head , that is really quite clever, I must congratulate you on that [ ]
… you can’t go wrong with [this art] as you get things like “peace” and other [words] on there [ ]
… anyway let’s get back to this – I like street art, this is not unattractive
… this area to the right is possibly not as attractive as the main art work but the idea of having this guy walking past looking at it I think was very good, without that it would have been too plain
Getting the picture 2
I selected “Portrait” as the genre . . .
Summary of judge’s comments
… you are a photographer and you are photographing a photographer
… my one question here would be is how old is the picture? It is either very old (10 years ago minimum) or yo have taken a picture of a young person who studies photography as that camera is a film camera [ ]
… you have taken a nice picture of this young lady with her camera taking her own picture and it is a pretty sideways view of her , you have her profile looking through the viewfinder [] , I have just realised that it is a black and white image of her
… it may well be an old image of her
… everything is right with it,[ ] I hope she knew you were taking the it [ ]
… within the frame area it is perfect , the background is nice and diffused
… it is a great shot of that young lady with her camera
