On our way to Grassington we stopped for a coffee and a visit to Stump Cross Caverns. This was our last full day in our visit to Yorkshire. I had been to the caverns when I was little but could not really remember much of the visit. I had also visited Mother Shipton’s Well as well but it had beenĀ closed when we had visited Knaresborough the day before.
Day 5: Sunday 12th March 2023
From the website we discovered that booking online gave us a discount. A few minutes after parking secured tickets online. The car park wasn’t very busy but the snow in front of the entrance was deep enough to cover our boots!
After a coffee in the area below the shop we showed our online tickets and after a safety briefing we were given hard hats and encouraged to make sure we wore them all the time! The couple who were briefed with us didn’t have boots on and were advised to change into them. It seems that in the caverns the paths are wet and in places there are deep puddles on them! I took a photograph of the map and the we descended the stairs.
By now I had banged my hard hat a few times!
And on through a passage to more galleries.
The shop was fascinating with fossils, rocks as well as lots of souvenirs. I bought six small magnetic magnets that would be very useful for holding papers up on ship cabin walls in future.
Everyone we spoke to was friendly and helpful and we’d advise anyone in the are to be sure to call.
