The Spectrum & Heywood Trophies are inter-club competitions involving Yateley CC, Aldershot CC, Farnham & Fleet CC and Farnborough CC. These are PDI competitions with just one image submitted for each trophy. There were 32 images in the Spectrum and 36 in the Heywood.
Clouds over the Beaulieu River
The set subject for for the Spectrum Trophy was ‘landscape’. This image of the Beaulieu River was taken on our earlier visit to the New Forest.
Summary of judge’s comments
… A quiet feel to this image, that perhaps comes across because yo have rendered it in black and white, , taking out all of the colours so perhaps don’t see the congestion and the garish colours that might be there, [this] has simplified it much more and from that point of view has cooled the whole thing down and made it much more tranquil
… there are some clouds in the sky band perhaps they are a little bit menacing in some places , the light is quite bright but I wonder if in about half an hour or so’s time that maybe they will have developed just a little bit more and and the morning sun will have faded
… so it is a very tranquil cool image
… in terms of moving thorough the picture I am perhaps finding that that middle section is just perhaps somewhat cluttered , I am just wondering if there was a position that you could have moved to where it would have simplified the image a little bit more and just lead the eye through just that little bit more cleanly than the image that you have presented
… I like the letterbox effect , it keeps the eye in to the main action in the middle of the picture
Silhouette of a stag
The Heywood Trophy was an open competition. At Farnborough this season I am taking advantage of being able to re-submit images. This stag was alone on a small hill and passed by us as he walked towards Pen Ponds. This image had already scored a 10 in a previous PDI competition.
Summary of judge’s comments
… what a fabulous silhouette and so well positioned with that little bit of grass just growing higher than the rest , I think that that is absolutely superb,
… one could argue that the weed at the bottom of the feet is a little bit of a distraction, , [] you might have ben able to deal with that one at the bottom, it looks as though he kinda has a big blob at the bottom of his foot which perhaps makes the composition just slightly less clean
… but a beautiful silhouette and just those magnificent antlers just going up through that cloud , intersecting with that cloud which I think is beautiful so you haven’t got a completely uniform background
… I love the different banding, the different blues, the evening light that you coming through here
… I would image that you would be proud to have got this shot and is certainly something that I would like to have in my portfolio
