On Tuesday 22n March I gave a one hour training session on Social Media for BNI Farnham.
These are the topics that were covered:
Overview
Twitter
Setting up Twitter
Tweeting
Hashtags
Dos & Don’ts
Facebook
Facebook Fan Pages
Pulling it all together
What else is out there?
I had checked the speed of the Internet connection and it was not fast enough to reasonably expect an audience to put with the delays. The Chapter had specifically requested that the presentation should concentrate on Twitter and Facebook and how to link it all together. Luckily for me the Chapter gave extra time for networking as there were a few visitors and all this extra time was needed as my laptop decided it didn’t like connecting to the hotel’s projector at all.
A lesson learnt from the BNI Basingstoke presentation was to run some of the social media videos for YouTube while everyone was eating their breakfast rather than taking up too much time out of the presentation.
The 22nd was the day after the fifth birthday of Twitter so we started with the first ever Tweet:
“just setting my twttr”
As part of the request for the presentation was to detail the setting up of a Twitter account and then examples of using Tweets for interactions, sending videos and pictures and then a simple run through of dos and don’ts. We covered some of the available Twitter clients (while we still have a choice) and moved onto the options available on a smartphone.
For Facebook we concentrated on fan pages with examples of how to set them up, get your URL and post as the fan page rather than from your personal account.
In the wash-up we covered how to pull everything together and emphasised the importance of a solid marketing base for the social media, gaining testimonials and of using blogs to improve interest in websites.
The feedback was very positive, examples below:
“Great presentation. Interesting and witty” – Mr P
“Fantastic! Would love a follow up presentation to the group” – Ms P
“ It helped me move a little closer to starting to take Social Media seriously” – Ms S
“ I realise it now if we are to survive it has to be embraced” – Mr H
“ Wonderful presentation- really inspiring. Thank You” – Ms N
I would like to thank the Leadership Team at BNI Farnham for giving me the opportunity to present to their members and for allowing me to attend as a visitor to their Chapter so I could see how other BNI Chapters work.
Check out their website as they are a thriving BNI Chapter with great members.
BNI Farnham meets every Tuesday morning at 6:45 am at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel on the Hogs Back, Farnham.
