This is my image for the second round of the internal digital image league competition for the 2016-2017 season.
Sunrise over the English Channel
This is my first attempt at a triptych image. While sailing to the Caribbean in October 2015, the sunrise of our first day at sea after leaving Southampton was spectacular. From the many images of that morning I selected three images, cropped them and then put them against a black background using Photoshop Elements.
Judge’s comments
…I don’t often see a triptych in PDIs so that is quite interesting from my viewpoint and the colours are amazing
…There are two comments to make but what really makes the pictures as individual pictures themselves is the extraordinary cloud formations or are they contrails, but it doesn’t matter. I’m just asking the question
… it makes for such an interesting sight. Quite often when I am taking photographs if I see a contrail I feel it spoils the picture. Because usually they are very boring and uninteresting but these are not are they? They capture the eye and make you think about what is going on.
…the author has thought about the presentation very well because as a triptych it gives us three different perspectives on the scene which is obviously consistent even though we have three great pictures out of it
.. this is very much about the artistic impression and I think each of those has merit on their own but presented as a triptych I have to mark as one image because that is how it is presented
…I think I’ll hold that back
The score
There were 23 images in this round of the Intermediate digital image league.
This image was held back by the judge so I did have a slight frisson of excitement . . .
Judge’s comments
…strong artistic impression here, simply because we are looking at something slightly unusual
…and the unusualness of it is brought out not only by the colours but the fact that it is presented as a triptych and that is all to its benefit
… nice artistic piece of work
… I think it lacks a certain amount of strength … so 9
Sunrise over the English Channel scored 9.
