Round 5 this season for both print and projected digital image were on a set subject.
The projected digital images set subject was ‘Toy box and fairy tales’. The judge was asked to accept images that reflected either topic or both. For the print round the set subject was ‘In an English country garden’
Red 1 ready to go
I have to freely admit that this was a last minute image only taken a few hours before the midnight deadline for the competition round.
Judge’s comments
… A very colourful toy box from which everything seems to have escaped, you are using the aeroplane here to hold everything together and a whole variety of different coloured shapes around and about it, it all seems to relate to the same kind of modular arrangements… it is dare I say it a bit of a muddle
… but that is what toy boxes in my limited experience used to be , all be it I never had as many toys as this, I am told that children these days do have much more equipment to play with
… and I think that that is reflected in the image
… photographically I think that it has been quite well done, it does get a little less than than sharp in the background there,
… I am prepared to live with that as long as you are prepared to live with my mark
Jubilee Villas
I was at a loss to find an image that I was comfortable with to portray an English country garden. I went back through old images and found this one from Stanley in the Falklands.
Judge’s comments
… I am intrigued because the flag that is flying there, whilst it has UK associations, it doesn’t appear to be an English flag. It is furled, it is not organised in a way that you can distinguish it, you may have a better view on the PDI… I supposed it refers to the concept of Britishness and the notion of a country garden, to some foreign clime and that would seem to be reflected also in the style of the building
… nice idea, not one I’d have thought of, well seen, well executed
… had it had a bit more flag I think it would have worked even better

The original images
‘Red 1 ready to go’:
The image of a LEGO Red Arrow was shot on a bed of LEGO using only the bedroom light. The only processing was a light crop to remove the bed cover and to adjust the White balance.
‘Jubilee Villas’:
This image was shot after walking back from the Governor’s House in Stanley. Jubilee Villas were built at the time of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee and have come to be one of the iconic images of Stanley. This image simply cropped to be a square before printing.
