This was our second visit to Richmond Park to hopefully see the deer rut. We had waited two weeks to try and see the rut. This time we didn’t try to drive to Pen Ponds but stopped in the almost empty car park of Pembroke Lodge.
The sun was just rising as we headed off towards the centre of the park and Pen Ponds. We came across a small group of males.
And we did watch a small exhibition of antler bashing…
One of the deer moved off and ran through the ferns parallel to our path.
Open spaces
We could see deer wanting to cross the path and these two ran between us and the photographer in front.
Sunrise over Richmond Park
Around Pen Ponds
This fallow deer was under the trees in the sunlight.
In the bracken
Over the path we stood in trees and watched this stagadd bracken and spend a lot of time rubbing his antlers on a fallen branch.
The does were scattered around the path.
Out in the open
In the open and almost surrounded by photographers.
Back in the trees again
As we walked back to the car park this spider’s web glistened.
Pembroke Lodge Cafe
The car park was now full with cars slowly driving round looking a space to park. The cafe here was very busy compared to Pen Ponds and after queuing I discovered that the bacon “rolls” were pre-cooked and then warmed in a microwave. The sheer number of customers probably making it inprtacil to prepare food onsite.
