We were away on our visit to Canada and New England and missed the start of the Richmond Park deer rut in September.
Like last year we went to the Pen Ponds car park. We could not hear any bellowing from stags as we left the cars. In front of us a single stag was walking away from the road.
We followed the road away from the car park to where we had seen deer last year. Looking back down the small hill over the raod, I watched this couple of photographers engrossed in the sights in front of them and ignoring their backs.
On the hill
At the top of the slight rise, ‘on the hill’, we walked to a fallen tree to watch the large open area in front of us.
In front of us the full grown stag had already collected a group of does together. Then at the side of us a group of deer broke cover and joined the open space.
Two of the young stags put on a play fight right in front of us.
The large stag walked over and bellowed and the young stags walked away . . .
Getting the shots
This is the fallen tree.
At the other side of the open space I could see this photographer laid down getting his shots from the side of a tree.
Behind us over the road this photographer watched as this stag approached the road and walked up the slope.
