While I was in Paris in January 2023 I visited the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation to see the exhibition of his works and those of Martin Parr. Their images were of the English at work and at play but separated by decades.
Henri Cartier-Bresson had been commissioned by Granada TV in the early 60s for a series of images to be used in a TV documentary.
One of his images caught my eye and months later I have had confirmation from relatives and friends that indeed one of the ladies in this photograph was my Grandmother, her sister and their friend!
From left to right: Mrs Amy Hardacre (nee Tebb), Mrs Foulds and Ms Beatrice Tebb.
I contacted the Foundation and received this kind response:
Thank you for your email and the caption you gave us.
The only information I have on this particular picture is : Blackpool, July 1962.
There is nothing in our files – none on the back of the print nor on the back of the contact sheet.
There are only two visuals on the contact but only one is edited by Henri Cartier-Bresson. The other one is similar to the one you know, just taken a little further away. We cannot use it or show it as it is not validated by HCB.
I hope this is helpful.
Warm regards,
Odile
