Our training seminars in Birmingham were at a new venue, the Holiday Inn Express. The two seminars were arranged by UK4Business.
We travelled up to Birmingham the evening before and had an ‘interesting’ journey from Euston on London Midland trains who clearly don’t believe in either buffet cars or guards that check tickets on the train. Unusually my hotel, The Briar Rose, was only minutes away from New Street Station and only a few minutes’ walk from the seminar venue.
We arrived early at the training venue and helped to transform the room ready for the attendees.
If you have been following my Twitter account you may have noticed that I am road testing a Samsung Chromebook. One of our all-day attendees discovered that her laptop PC was locked down and the Wi-Fi disabled. I am pleased to say my Chromebook performed faultlessly all day for her and best of all there was no training needed – it just works like the Chrome browser on a PC.
Our course has been updated (again) to take in the latest changes to LinkedIn and before we kicked off these were the topics of interest to the attendees.
Advice on setting up and using LinkedIn company pages
Do I accept all these people asking to link to me?
Do I endorse people who have endorsed me even when I don’t know them?
Do I recommend people that I know?
Should we use company pages or groups?
Can I change a company page URL – ours is too long?
All the attendees had personal profiles but we did find out an interesting check performed by LinkedIn when I was adding the attendees to our private support group. Two of the attendees were ‘flagged’ by LinkedIn because of their ‘low’ number of connections.
”Really good content and well explained. Definitely going to create a company page on LinkedIn as a result of this course.
~ Lauren of Mobile Solutions Ltd
”GOOD – I needed an understanding of LinkedIn and now have it.”

The afternoon session was about using Facebook for Business.
Is it worth setting up a page at all?
How best to use a Facebook Business Page after setting it up?
How do we get more interactions?
I did manage to cause consternation with my colleagues in the Bureau as I used the Bureau’s Facebook page for some of my live demonstrations on posting – namely highlighting and pinning posts.
During the break we applied for a username for a company page that had 100s of Likes and was itself a good example of an active page.
“Pleased with the information received.
Thanks also to Ian for setting up our company with a customised Facebook URL”

“Quite informative in many ways and helped to highlight a few issues that need to be looked into”
