Whitby in the evening
Judge’s comments
Certainly being a Yorkshireman, I have spent many happy holidays in Whitby and this is a classic view of the harbour there. Beautiful lighting, lots of detail in the those houses and the boats, a particularly nice time of day.I like the ripples in the water. It is the ripples in the water that drew my attention to fact that I don’t think that image is quite level , there is a slight slant to it if you look at the reflection of the masts of the boats and the pillars of the pier in the centre, it is just not quite level which is a shame really.
I think that it is a very good detailed image and the sky is held in well, nothing distracting there, so to look at I feel this would make a good jigsaw.
So nicely done, it is a small print, not a large print compared to the rest but it is a very pleasing sunset image and you’ve picked the good lighting at the time of day that we need it.
Nothing leaps out as a big distraction in the image which is good, so a nice classic view.
Shadows on her face
Judge’s comments
Interesting figure, a very intriguing portrait. You’ve chosen to show us this [model’s] face and a bit of [her] shoulder, it is what you have hidden as well with the shadow which is quite intriguingObviously lots of engagement of the model with the photographer, we can clearly see her eyes, nice catchlights in the eyes.
It is on a lustre paper but very very sharp , good tones, lost of detail in the image and we definitely have got some sort of engagement with the this figure
But the shadows coming across, do they give it a sense of mystery? I don’t know to me they are a bit disconcerting and I’m wondering whether the shadows [with a] different orientation or a slightly different position on the face and less brightness , a little bit darker on that shoulder might have strengthened it. [I am] A little bit distracted by the shoulder, the shoulder is quite bright and I am drawn to the shoulder and I feel that I should just be drawn to the face
The hair is a bit messy in the background but that is fine
Some people take out al the skin blemishes on these images, I am not so sure that it is necessary in this image and you haven’t done that and that’s fine. But some people might think that you should [have]. I am not too worried about that.
Yes, intriguing expression to look at and that sense of mystery.
Balancing the left hand corner with the top right hand corner which is completely dark doesn’t work for me as well as it could.
It is one those images where the tones in the image are quite striking and drawing my eye and I’m a little unbalanced by that. Maybe that is what you tried to achieve but for me I would preferred it such as it was darker on the left and a little more detail on the top right
Interesting
