Today we planned to visit the Lennon Wall on the other side of the Charles Bridge and then explore the streets and island over there. Yesterday we had visited unfamiliar places in Prague including the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Dancing House as well as the crypt of the Cathedral of Sts Cyril and Methodius and and enjoyed another fabulous meal in a busy Italian restaurant.
Day 4: Thursday 8th December
We had another wonderful breakfast, this time in another part of the restaurant. This side room had a view over the back street of the hotel and the parking garage opposite.
Charles Bridge
After breakfast we set off for the Charles Bridge through the back streets and Tyn Square. On the bridge we spotted a beaver below us.
The bridge wasn’t too busy and after we crossed I took another picture of the Petrin Tower that is visible from most of Prague. This visit we had decided that climbing it again would be many steps too far!
Once over the Charles Bridge, we turned left and followed our map to the Lennon Wall. Before Mostecka we found the first street art of the morning.
On Mostecka these German tourists were already ready for Christmas.
The Lennon Wall
The wall is almost opposite the French and Estonian Embassies on Velkoprevorske. The wall in Prague became a symbol of freedom and rebellion din the years of Communist rule.
For a complete set of images from the wall (in December 2022 ) see my blog post.
At the back of the wall, the garden was been tided by a gardener. He was trying to clear the almost knee deep piles of leaves. The building to the side of this walled garden was a gallery.
After walking around the exhibits I bought fridge magnets that celebrated earlier street art on the wall.
The district around the wall has magnificant buildings and interesting alleyways leading to courtyards.
Coffee time
Once back on the street from the bridge, Mostecka, we walked further up and on the corner we stopped for a coffee.
The restaurant was very busy, as by now it was later in the morning and everyone like us wanted a sit down and a drink!
Kampa and the Crawling Babies
Our next place to visit was outside of the Kafka museum on the island of Kampa. To get there we retraced of steps towards the Lennon Wall, but this time we walked past the wall and onto the island.
Outside the museum were sculptures of the crawling babies.
Disconcerting to say the least!
From there, we walk back towards the bridge past fencing that protected extensive works taking place along the banks of the island.
Once past the fences we could see the bridge and looking back there were piers with where excursions up and down the river could be taken. This silhouetted lady was on one of them.
Above we could see the statues along the bridge as well as having a closer look at the wooden piers protecting the bridge’s arches.
Small boats could pass around the island and go under the bridge.
Along the cobbled streets of the island and past Archibald At The Charles Bridge hotel where we had stayed on our first ever visit to Prague. The small square there had its own Christmas Market.
