After the COVID restrictions were eased in Wales we could go again to the Mach Loop.
And only the kitchen sink was left behind!
To Dinas Mawddwy 12th September 2021
We stopped at the services on the M6 Toll – as this was a late holiday week as people tried to fit in breaks in the UK the place was unusually packed.
Lake Vyrnmy
On our way to Dinas Mawddwy we left the A458 and headed North to Lake Vyrnmy. This is a large reservoir that provides water to Liverpool.
We crossed the dam and parked in one of the car parks past the visitor centre and near the play park.
Crossing the dam on foot we had great views across the lake towards the Gothic styled straining tower.
We then walked down the steps to the sculpture park on the opposite side of the river. Form the path we had a better view of the outflow from the dam.
This sculpture is carved from the stump of what was once the tallest tree in Wales.
This is the view of the dam from below the weir.
Further down the river we crossed using a small foot bridge and walked back towards the dam. There was a small cafe with covered tables back up the road towards the dam. We sheltered from the rain and drank our cups of tea and chatted to a couple who like us were just visiting.
To Bala…
Going round the North side of the lake we were looking for the road that would lead us to Dinas. The lack of helpful signage meant we took the wrong road. This one headed due North and eventually reached Bala!
The road went up and down the hills!
When we met the first car coming the other way there unfortunately were no passing bays. After backing up 100 yards or more the incoming car an inordinate amount of time to squeeze past but only after getting out and checking the road. One of the cars following following him stopped and commiserating with us!
The final descent to Bala.
Once in Bala we passed familiar buildings and headed off for the 40 minute drive to Dinas Mawddwy along thankfully much wider roads. Passing by the Bwlch the hills were covered in clouds.
The Red Lion
Once at the pub we quickly emptied our cases and headed downstairs for a drink and an evening meal.
