This week was the final rounds of both the print and projected digital image league competitions.
Smooth Jazz
This image was one of the images shot on my EOS 100D at JessyJ’s London concert at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in December 2015.
I had taken the original image to a review workshop and it was from some of these suggestions that the final image was produced.

… one of my things is that if you put in a photograph of a musician, I want to believe that that musician is playing . . . she really is playing, she is engrossed in the music and it really is working well… the background helps as it helps us to concentrate on the figure
… [her] eyes are closed which for a portrait would not work but in this case it is what what one does when playing an instrument, there for the eyes are fine
Overall it is telling me all I need to know about she is doing, I think you’ve caught that really well, whatever the challenges of the lighting, you’ve done pretty well, look at the face, nice lighting there, and the shoulders and arms where you could have had burnout has been done very well
Overall a nice piece of work, quite a difficult thing to do well – deserves a 10
Walking over the bridge
This image is from my first street photography work shop with Damien Demolder. This image has been posted on other sites (such as Instagram) but with either no cropping or a different crop.
On reflection I have probably cropped it rather too fiercely and over emphasised the backs of the two figures.

the concept is clear, we have the couple in the foreground and just enough of the background that it has to be the wobbly bridge with St Pauls behind,… it is growing on me, to begin with that black jacket dominated, we can see nothing of their faces or characters, first off this stopped me from going through the picture but when I take the trouble, the rest of it is very nicely judged
. . . we all know enough about St Pauls that that little bit of it is all that we need
… the people there and there [on the bridge] work well
… can I see it again at at the end, I still don’t know whether the figures are too big
The scores
“Smooth Jazz” scored a 10.
“Walking over the bridge” scored a 10.
