Day 3: Monday 20th February: the North Sea
Our second day on the North Sea started when we woke up to the ship pitching. A quick look outside, and we could see that the sea had become quite lively. From the daily paper the swell on the sea was reported to be going to as much as 6 metres.
We went to the Grand Dining Room for breakfast. Choosing off the menu was easy, but we decided breakfast in the buffet was much preferable in future. This was as we would have more choice of portion sizes and could mix things up.
After the morning announcements we were not allowed out on the upper decks. Instead we took it easy and watched a film in our room.
Rougher seas in the afternoon
Lunch was back in the Grand Dining Room and same as at breakfast, we decided to stick in future with the Deck 12 Grill in future for lunch.
After another spell in the cabin, we headed down to Deck 5 to the so-called Living Room. This oddly name part of the shape had a central staircase, a horseshoe bar with simple snacks on one side and a dedicated bar on the other.
We sat on stools at the bar and I had another bottle of the pale ale that I’d been drinking in the Britannia Lounge. The open sandwiches on offer, although quite small, did make a great early afternoon snack! Being on Deck 5, we were treated to some spectacular waves covering the windows. The ship was moving around a lot both pitching and rolling. We almost came off our stools in one instance. The drinks on the bar slid to one side and our stools, with us, slid over a meter from the bar itself as the ship rolled.
After this experience we went back to our cabin and watched more films with forays out on the balcony to check the North Sea.
Back in the Living Room the view outside was definitely interesting!
The Grill (buffet) on Deck 12 was closed for evening meals, due to concerns about staff and guests walking around the buffet area.
