Day 4 Thursday 19th May Flam
Up early I watched as the ship slowly sailed the final part of fjord towards Flam. It was no longer raining but the hills were all covered by low clouds. These had all gone after breakfast.
Flam is at the head of Aurlandsfjord and is justifiably famous for its railway that climbs steeply out of the town up the hills to meet up with the mainline that runs through the centre of Norway.
Today we had planned to relax, take in the views and follow some of the paths around the town. After walking past the shops and hotels we walked along the wooden quay to the Marina for a late morning coffee.
After leaving the Marina we went into the Fretheim Cultural Park through a series of paths that climbed higher and higher giving some wonderful views of the fjord.
Along the paths were a whole series of street art installations.
After the train had passed beneath us going up the valley we walked along the road to quayside to visit the Ægir microbrewery’s bar and sample some local beer.
Where the ship was docked there was a large open area and I helped out a few other tourists taking pictures of their groups with the fjord in the background. There was a path next to a pond that lead onto a small beach where canoe lessons were offered.
We then went back on board for a late lunch.
The sail away afforded us some wonderful views of the fjord. Aurora sailed slowly until reaching Sogneford then out into the sea and North to go down Nordfjorn to Olden.
Dinner for me was gammon steak with chicken caesar salad for a start (no anchovies).
Our cruise continued to Olden and Stavanger.
