Day 3 Wednesday 18th May Bergen
On arrival in Bergen we had our breakfast in our room.
The ship was docked close to the town, so we were in easy walking distance of the Old Town and the rest of Bergen.
It was raining in Bergen(again) and we cut across the castle grounds towards the Bryggen. Just as we came close to the quay two Norwegian navy vessels were leaving.
Once past the Bryggen we were able to easily board the funicular to the top of the hill.
At the top we walked around the restaurant taking in the views of Bergen
We then went through the forest past some of the trolls that are out there!
Once back down the funicular we walked through the fish market which was gearing up to serve lunches.
It was time for a drink of coffee and our usual cafe wasn’t open till noon so we went to the second floor Lido Cafe. This had views of the fish market.
On our way back to the ship we explored the Bryggen. This area of Bergen once was the home of merchants who traded fish for wheat from the rest of Europe. Now it has art galleries, offices, restaurants, bars as well as lots of shops.
We passed where the ship was docked and went to have a look at the Old Town.
Just down the road from the Old Town I re-visited the building and the nearby lock-up doors – both with new and old street art. Here is a full collection of the street art from Bergen Old Town.
Once back on-board lunch was in the The Glasshouse. This time it was a selection from the choice menu plus a bottle of very nice red.
We gathered for a ‘sail away’ party in a friend’s cabin, watching the rain still falling when the Captain explained that Aurora needed more fuel and this couldn’t be delivered until after 8 pm. This meant that the ship would not be leaving Bergen until much later. Our dinner was in The Beach House.
Comedian Lloyd Davies was in the Curzon Theatre and his ‘clean’ jokes and altered popular songs was as topical and popular as ever which finished at 23:30 which was then an opportunity to see Bergen at night and in the rain.
The ship left the dock at around midnight and I stayed out on deck to watch our passage under the Askøy Bridge.
