Day 8 At sea, transit to Tortola
Azura is back in the Atlantic sailing due East from Hispaniola to our next stop in the Virgin Islands. We have blue skies but also have a strong breeze and a moderate swell of 2.5 metre waves.
After breakfast I went to a talk in the Whitewall Gallery just off the Atrium. The talk was titled ‘Sherree Valentine Daines: The History of Impressionism’ and was given by Sean.
Sean took us through a brief history of Impressionism, describing the artists struggles to be recognised through to Monet’s painting of the sun giving the movement both a name and finally recognition. He then moved on to tell us about Sherree’s life and her work.
The port side of the ship was in the shade for most of the day as the ship sailed East. We did have a small group of sea birds that were riding the wind alongside all day. They would dive down and catch fish then fly back up past the side of the ship to continue soaring. Here are some of my pictures (still no dolphins…) taken in the morning and the afternoon.
We visited the Costa coffee for a change at lunch time.
After lunch I went back to the gallery to hear about the Argentinian artist Fabian Perez, again from Sean. Perez had had a priviledged childhood until his mother died then he discovered what his Father did every night and he became involved in his Father’s businesses. After his Father died and he gave the businesses away he travelled earning a living by working in dojos, washing up and painting in Paris, Japan and latterly in Los Angeles. After his big break came he never forget his past and that is the background to a lot of his paintings.
Another of Fabian Perez’s quote about working girls “Working girls in Buenos Aires could seduce a man by lighting a cigarette and geisha girls could do the same by flicking their fan”
Here’s a beautiful sunset from stern of the ship.
The evening was another formal night and this time it was a grilled peppered lamb leg steak for me.
