Rockland
We were now on the road that crossed across the open space above where we had, come ashore. On the opposite side of the road was a restaurant, Hills Seafood, with a large outside covered patio. We went inside for a much needed rest and a drink. While we waited for a table I checked out the draft beers and chose to have a Shipyard.
Outside in the shade on the patio, we watched meals being brought to the tables around us and decided that we would come back here for lunch later.
We left the restaurant and continued along Main Street. The street had a varied selection of shops and art galleries. Some of the shops were large and had an amazing variety of clothes, souvenirs, books, cards and pictures.
The Art Gallery that the ship ran tours to, had a shop attached and we spent a lot of time in there time looking at the collection of books and pictures
It may be that state law that pedestrians have priority crossing the road (on crossings) but the lady in the car right who had to do an emergency stop clearly didn’t believe it. I have a suspicion that she was on her phone.
Lunch at Hills Seafood
We walked back along the street to the restaurant and sat inside to avoid the wasps out on the patio. I had clam chowder followed by fish and chips washed down with my favourite drink, Fat Tire.
The place was very busy and the food was indeed excellent. Listening to conversations around us we learnt that the season in Rockland would end in a couple of weeks and then the restaurant will be closed for the winter. It seems everyone in the town was pleased to have the cruise ship call so close to the end of the season.
Along the shore
After lunch we walked to Rockland’s Landing and the queue for the tenders was very long. At this port there was no help from a local boat for the ship’s tenders to get passengers back onboard.
We decided to walk along the shore the other way as the towards the coast walk. We should’ve checked the walking map as the coast walk actually started at the other end of the main street not down on the shore past the landing! But this is where we started and we walked until we came to buildings and car parks and the path we were on stopped. This was the tank outside a busy restaurant.
We chatted to other visitors who were in Rockland from New York and were sat enjoying the views. Later we sat and watched the harbour and I took pictures of the buoys that were laying around the small patches of grass.
These buoys were not small but were very large and clearly meant for deep waters.
