The fishing harbour
The shuttle bus had driven us past the fishing harbour and this was our destination after lunch. On my left was a small church and down the nearby side street I took pictures of one of the oldest houses in Travemunde.
We had to pass cafes and these private boats before we reached the fishing boats.
Along the quayside in the fishing boat harbour I took pictures of both the boats and the murals decorating the walls.
We strolled back to the small square and caught the next shuttle bus back to the ship. There we tried the new ice-cream being served on-board – it was delicious.
Leaving Travemunde
Travemunde is a busy Baltic ferry port and we watched a Baltic ferry turning around in the wide part of the river before moving onto its nearby berth.
Out on deck we watched as Aurora slowly went down the river passing the shops and the promenade. This was lined with holidaymakers watching and waving as we passed by.
And then we left Travemunde behind.
Byron Johnston
The evening’s entertainment started before our dinner as we went to see Byron Johnston in Carmens. Before the show started as we were early I had a Jaipur beer.
This was a solo guitar performance that took in flamenco, classical as well as rock guitar music.
He played music from Carmen but with a Jimi Hendrix like slant. I was amazed at how he stretched the strings of the guitar for this piece.
Next he explained how he was going to multi-track the next piece live on stage, He laid down the bass, a drum track and then a rhythm guitar track. Each of these were layered on top of each other. By now I had recognised Eagles’ Hotel California.
The recorded overlays were then used as the backing track for the lead guitar. After this performance I did buy a copy of his CD and learnt that his guitar strings were nylon…
Dinner and then a show
Dinner was in the Peninsular and was tomato soup, steak and kidney pie and a Rocky Road sundae.
Rather than go to the quiz we went to see ‘My Generation’ by the Headliners in the Curzon Theatre. This was a show that we had seen before. The show came to an abrupt end at 10.55pm when the curtains came across the stage and the houselights came on. We decided to leave rather than wait for a restart. We subsequently learnt that there had been a power failure backstage.
Back on our balcony I was once again watching the flashing red lights on wind farms as Aurora passed by in the late evening.
