The Annual PDI Competition on 28th March 2024 had alternative themes : creative or open images. I chose to enter two open images. The judge was asked to pick 1,2,3rd and Highly Commended for each theme. In the OPen theme there were 26 images entered.
I’m scared
We visited the “Art of the brick” exhibition off Brick Lane. I used my iPhone to record the exhibits and sometimes other visitors.
Summary of judge’s comments
… I think that the idea of being scared because something has taken a bite out of this statue is where we are going
… the elements of red, white and blue come across as well chosen
… whether this was just happenstance, I don’t know, I do like those elements of red, white and blue
… and again there is a little bit of story telling with the expression of the lady here is giving, maybe she was asked to do that by you? And I think that was to good effect
… I quite like just the thin white keyline around the edge of this, you never used to have this with slides, you wouldn’t put a key line there; but when you can, I think as long as it doesn’t over complicate or distract from the image it can work well, probably it works well because of that whiter not bright white, creamy off white jacket or jumper that she has on
Reflections in the alley
Before I went into the “Impressionists on paper” exhibition at the Royal Academy, I walked around the West End and remembered this alley with lots of mirrors.
Summary of judge’s comments
… I think it is reflections up as well as along, reflections everywhere; left, right,
… I pleased that you did this, I understand why did this in mono because there is a cone which would be orange and white, just behind the two figures in the reality part of the image and not in the reflections
… so I think that this was a good reason for having mono, it would be difficult to clone it out in the position that it is in because you’ve got part of one of the people’s legs which have needed removing
…what I might have removed is the white square that is an electrical point or something in the right hand corner, in the dark patch is that white square, I think I might have lost that [] , there’s no reflection to copy on the other side either to remove
… looking around the image at the top you have got a really quite solid black line as it comes, the bottom of all these mirrors, I don’t mind that but what I do mind is where it stops and you have a white bit just before the left hand top corner and so; and I would have done something that, but where it stops we have a white bit before the top left hand corner, I would have done something with it
… what I might have done is to add a little bit more of it to cover the white, I don’t think I would have cropped it off because then we would have had an extra bit of white, too much on the top
… so just that little bit, it is only a small bit you would have said that it didn’t match up with the others then
… but I think for the edge of an image it just does jar just a tiny little bit
.. so yes I like the seeing eye that yo had when you took this
