This blog details the next day in our Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage in April 2015 and follows on from my earlier blogs. We had left Stamsund the previous evening and were scheduled to arrive at Bodo early in the next morning.
Day 4 – April 17th 2015
Early in the morning we were awoken by a short message over the ship’s tannoy announcing that we had the Northern lights out on deck. It was a bit of a scramble to get dressed and pick up my camera gear to get out on deck as we had no idea just how long the display would last.
After leaving Stamsund we were crossing Vestfjord which is an open stretch of sea and luckily for us the Northern Lights appeared so far South of Tromso. I have placed the best of my photographs from this opportunity in this blog.
We were out on deck for quite sometime and retired to the ship’s cafe for some tea and to have a first look at the pictures on my camera. By now it was close to the ship docking at Bodo so I went back out on deck to take yet more pictures.
Here’s MS Finnmarken alongside Bodo after all the cargo had been moved.
In the morning we arrived at Ornes.
There was the usual hive of activity as cargo was loaded onto the ship.
The views were stunning so early in the morning at Ornes as we prepared to leave.
After leaving Ornes our path crossed with MS Kong Harald and I took this picture through the window in the main restaurant after leaping up from my breakfast!
As we sailed South we passed another trading post called Selsovik.
Crossing the Artic Circle
And then we came to the marker for the Artic Circle.
To celebrate officially moving south there was a brief ceremony for all the guests on-board the ship. In order to obtain the celebration spoon participants in the ceremony had to take a spoonful of cod liver oil.
After taking our medicine we washed the cod liver oil down with a some fizz and orange juice.
Next we came to Nesna. This was a very short stop and I was unable to get off the ship by the time I reached the gangplank. Passengers who had left the ship immediately it docked were brought back by the ship’s whistle as we were leaving early.
The street art that I had seen was on a nearby warehouse wall so this is the best I could do for a picture from the ship.
We docked close to the centre of Sandnessjoen.
Before lunch we had time to leave the ship and do some exploring.[5245]. In a small square there was a statue to celebrate the poet and priest Petter Dass plus an interesting carving on the street as we walked there.
As we sailed towards our next port other shipping traffic could be see, this ship was going North.
and this ship was out at sea going South.
Our next port was Bronnoysund.
Thee are some views as we left Bronnoysund.
After leaving Bronnoysund we sailed to see Torghatten mountain. This mountain is famous for having a 160 meter long tunnel that is 35 meters wide and 20 meters high.
When I visit again this another of those occasions when I will use a different lens.
