This was the first round of the PDI Trophy Competition at Farnborough Camera Club in the 2023-2024 season on the 21st September 2023. Both images were allowed to be open images.
Crossing the Bridge
On the second day of my workshop with Valérie Jardin in Paris we visited the Île Saint-Louis. This lady was crossing the Pont de la Tournelle towards the island.
Summary of judge’s comments
… bright background, dark foreground; but you still see her she is not silhouetted
… what I don’t like about this – well you have probably heard this before but – something sticking out of people’s head. She has a very big thing sticking out of her head. If you had caught her one second later then her head would have been above these buildings, you might have avoided that problem
… having said that where you have her in the frame is the right place- you should waited for the next step
… it is not clear what she is carrying – probably it is a mobile phone
… you exposure is for the background, so that you see that she is a bit blurry in her movements, I don’t think that detracts from the image, I think it is good to see that movement in this case
… and all the important parts are pretty still
Fun to be here
In April 2023 I went to my first Colour Walk at Old Smithfield Market. Everyone participant that I met was as happy as this lady – what a fun few hours I had there.
Summary of judge’s comments
… I don’t why but when I saw this the first thing that popped into head was actually a reference to “Keeping up appearances”
… but this is a very jolly lady and she has thousands of sunglasses, or at least eight in her necklace
… just looking at her, she is very creative, she is an extrovert with that huge smile, that huge umbrella and hat [] she is a character and you have captured her perfectly
… only negative is that background is slightly over exposed and you couldn’t do anything about that
… I think it suits B&W bit even though I would have liked to have seen colour as I am pretty sure that the colours would have been extraordinary
… I like it very much
