This was another early morning visit to Richmond Park for the deer rut. The sunrise as we drove down the M3 was spectacular but by the time we reached the park the clouds had settled in and the sun was gone.
My car was the only car in the Pen Ponds car park. Definitely a sign that nothing much was expected by everyone else this morning. So sadly everything was quiet and all the red deer we saw were does.
Above us there was a steady stream of plans heading for Heathrow. Just as before a British Airways A380 was the one to catch my eye.
On a walk around the ponds there were half a dozen herons. This one didn’t move, even when we were quite close.
When it did fly away it moved only a few metres to the water outlet.
On our way back to the road and to the hill we passed a handful of red deer in the woods.
After the hill, the walk through the woods above the road was uneventful – no owls or even parakeets unlike last week. We did come across a small group of fallow deer.
Breakfast
Our stay was quite short and we were the first customers for the cafĂ© – tea and bacon bap time. We chatted to a laday recently back from South Africa’s Kruger Park. Her images were amazing. I don’t think this was a day for capturing much action in the park.
