This visit on 2nd August 2022 to London was to attend a Smartphone Safari around Coal Drops Yard organised by Jeanette (Jet) Landon in the afternoon. The three of us planned to met Jeanette after a quick tour of the Elizabeth Line and visiting some of the photogenic tunnels at Canary Wharf and Kings Cross in the morning.
Bring your smartphone camera and we will explore St Pancras/Kings Cross. From the station itself, to the new Coal Drops Yard development and the canal, we will be photographing the regeneration that is taking place in this area.
Remember to bring a fully charged smartphone with you with space to take, edit and save photos.
St Pancras Thameslink/Govia entrance
We were a little early and had time to look around the station.
Jeanette was a little late as were some of the other group members. No issue as this gave us more time to look around! Once we were all together we left the station and walked up King’s Boulevard towards the Regent’s Canal. On the way we passed the construction site for the new Google building.
At the side of the canal we could see a crowd of people sitting on the steps watching the large screen.
After an introduction from Jeanette the safari started. First we played with using a pool of water to gt reflections. The water came from Jeanette’s water bottle.
Coal Drops Yard
At Coal Drops Yard we climbed steps to walk through the old warehouse. We practiced placing the phone close to the wall of the alley. Once through I then had my first view of Coal Drops Yard.
Below us was a large open space, opposite we could see shops and a modern building spanning across between the sides of the terrace where we were. Then using our macro lenses on the smartphone we practised depth of field and macro on the plants on the terrace.
The gasometer structure we could see was one of the developed gasometers beyond Coal Drops Yard.
Walking around the terrace I did try my hand at a selfie reflection.
Down in the square we walked down the row of shops and experimented with reflections and light.
