This was my fifth visit to Richmond Park in 2020. On arrival at Pen Ponds there were only a couple of other cars in the car park. We could hear stags behind the cafe braying and the odd snorting from way across the open spaces in front of us. We walked down to the ponds where I saw this heron stalking around the edge.
After walking around the ponds down to the open spaces below and watching fallow deer we came to a small group of red deer.
There were young stags, roe deer and one older stag
Here’s a close-up.
We followed him through bracken until he reached the pond.
We walked back across the open spaces following a small group of deer. Looking back this is where we were with the stag and where we went back to later.
We could see another group of deer so we walked back across the open spaces. Once there we watched the stag bellowing by the bracken above the ponds. We were staying well away and behind trees then this lady just walked by.
Walking back across the open space we watched another group of deer.
Back at the cafe we enjoyed a bacon roll and a cup of tea. We sat by the car as the seats by the cafe were soaking wet.
