In the morning of the second day of my street photography workshop we were in one of the ‘villages’ of Paris. In the small square outside of the church after Sunday service; tables were setup, music played and people danced!
Parisian dancers
Judge’s comments
…it is a street scene with two people, who are the main people, and you’ve got background detail
… this is lovely [the women’s face] and this is very nice [the man’s face], two expressions are quite good, conveying a story to us
… I am getting fussy now, , for me there is too much brightness in the background, here [pointing at the building behind the woman’s face] that should be about this sort of tone [pointing the building further along] and I feel there is a problem there slightly too [pointing at the man’s face] , and the focus on him is not quite as sharp
… your exposure because you are against the light makes parts of the image rather flat, lacks in definition
… they are all little points, whether you try to do something about it, I don’t know
… it is almost there for me, I like pictures like this but there are just those few technical things
The scores
There were 19 images in this projected digital round in Division 1.
‘Parisian dancers’ scored 8.5.
The original image
ISO100 50mm f8.0 1/125/sec
I had my camera set to save images in both JPG and Raw. The JPG image was a black and white conversion by the camera – this was the version I used as a basis for post-processing.
I showed the image to colleagues from the camera club and made adjustments to the sky (top right), worked on the texture of the women’s coat and cropped to reduce the sky and to remove the women bending over the tables on the right.
This is the original Raw version which I will use in the future to make my next versions.
