We set off a little later for our second visit to Richmond Park to follow the deer. The weather promised to be overcast with ground mist.
Now that the rut was approaching the Royal Parks had issued yet more warnings to photographers planning to come to Richmond Park. This is how this warning was reported in London’s Evening Standard.
Early morning in Richmond Park
We parked in the Pen Ponds car park as before. Other photographers set off for the path between the ponds just as we had the week before. Instead we walked around the wooded hill keeping it to our left as followed the path. Unlike the previous week we couldn’t hear any stags bellowing. After a while we cut up through the wood and up the hill back towards the internal road where we had seen deer the week before.
This road is only open to Park rangers and of course cyclists. Once over the road we walked into the mist and on into the open space beyond.
Then back behind us we heard a stag bellowing beyond the road. We walked back and then we could see a young stag just in the tree line. Beyond him we could hear a stag bellowing.
We watched as the stag moved around the tree line and then we could see all the other photographers.
The stag started coming towards us and for a moment we were a little concerned and then he turned back along the road alngside the passing cyclists.
As we walked closer to the road we could see the large stag making all the noise along with a group of hinds.
